Sixty apps removed from Google Play because infected by AdultSwine malware

Sixty new infected apps were discovered on the Google Play during the last week.

The cause was a malware known as AdultSwine, an infection that mainly:

  • – shows ads with adult content;
  • – shows requests to users for downloading of other malicious apps;
  • – shows requests to users for premium (paid) services.

To hide itself, AdultSwine remove its icon, making removal very difficult (with the methods normally used to remove apps on the Android devices).

Many of the infected apps were aimed at children, so it could be very dangerous for young users. In fact, children can beĀ disturbed seeing adult contents, asĀ happened for some users, who had already reported (through the Google Play review system) that one of the apps showed inappropriate advertising content, disturbing their children.

As we said in the title, Google have already removed them and banned the respective developer.

However, many of these apps were downloaded over 50000 times, so we can estimate that about 3 – 5 millions of users should be infected by AdultSwine.

This is another example of dangerous situation for Android users.
